My Technological Experiences

There's no point in lying here: I am a millennial. Being a millennial means that I grew up in a world full of technology. I use it when I watch TV, I use it to meet new people, I use it when I call my parents asking for some more money despite being an "independent college woman," and I use it as a college student. There really is no way to avoid using technology in this day and age. Technology is how I communicate, how I travel, and how I entertain. I do wish sometimes that the 21st century wasn't so dependent on technology, because there are some times when I feel it is taking over my life (a.k.a. spending a whole day binging a TV show on Netflix), but that is when I realize that I can control how often I use it. No matter how dependent our world is on technology, we can always take control.

From this class, I hope that I can learn about a different side of technology: technology in teaching. Since this is for an education credit, and I am an education major, I think it is important to learn how to use a SmartBoard and it's different functions, how to use a projector, and other ways that technology is used in education. I used SmartBoards as a student but I have not experienced it on the teachers side, so from this class I hope to become an almost-expert.

    I am not sure that we will spend much class time on SmartBoards. However, I used one as a teacher and trained others on how to use them during my time as a middle school teacher. I would be happy to share my knowledge and experiences.

Adaptive technology helps people with a disability perform tasks like reading and writing. In  Chapter 4 of our textbook, we learn about many different types of adaptive technologies. Word processing software, recorded (audio) books, and input and output devices are just the beginning. I have used audio books to listen to when I have long car rides, and that helps me fight motion sickness, but I do not know someone personally that has a disability and uses adaptive technology. A challenge that might arise in having adaptive technologies in the classroom is if the technology is glitching, or not working, then the student may not be able to use it as needed. I would use the Remember level in the classroom by having review PowerPoints and possibly making a Jeopardy! presentation where students can team up and compete while reviewing information before their test. The Flipped Classroom is similar to open education in the fact that students are watching videos outside of the classroom, but what sets flipped classroom apart is that it is used as homework, and when the students come back the next day, they are expected to have lessons and activities on the video. The teacher becomes less of the main educator, and is used as more of a guide, as said in the textbook. Open education was one of the "open" terms mentioned in the podcast and it is when a professor from one college or university can record their lecture and it be viewed to students in a completely other state.
